The SPARTA Project: decreasing pollution with smart parking and traffic analysis.

GreenVulcano has contributed to the “made in Italy” tech innovation for almost twenty years through the realisation of multiple projects. Often, the best solutions come from a eureka moment in a research lab - as GV’s one - and then realised in an international project.

And it’s exactly from GreenVulcano’s R&D department that the SPARTA Project (Smart PARking and Traffic Analysis) comes from. A Smart Parking solution which decreases pollution and emission of noxious gases, helping drivers avoid annoying queues and wasting time finding a free spot where to park.

As we all know, the majority of noxious gases emissions are based on the rhythms of urban traffic. In highly trafficked cities you can even lose 45 minutes a day on the road, half of which trying to find a parking spot near the office.

The SPARTA Project consists of an integrated platform with “effective” urban planification tools and measures which can support the parking turnover and make a better use of parking spaces. Smart Parking rudimentary experiments have been practised for years, but they face only in part the related issues, analyzing solely traffic flow and reduction. SPARTA, instead, is an innovative platform - both in terms of product and process - which allows to overcome the limits and constraints of the current systems through different technical features:

• a net of smart sensors placed in parkings to identify the free spaces;

• a net of sensors to measure the quality of air and to analyze the traffic flow;

• digital panels constantly updated to report the availability of parking and further traffic info;

• a multivariate mathematical model to establish a dynamic price for the parking, so as to encourage turnover and fill the available spaces equally;

• various Parking Proximity Info and Proximity Marketing tools (such as Gamification, for instance);

• various Data Mining previsional and geospatial analysis tools.

The enormous improvement of wireless sensor networks - thanks to the increasingly efficient miniaturization processes - allowed us to employ them in the field of urban traffic management for real.

However, the SPARTA project, thanks to the improvements of GreenVulcano’s artificial intelligence and tech solutions, introduces smart parking not only as a mere urban traffic management tool, but also and especially as a support for the local administrations and managers.

Moreover, the SPARTA platform profits not only the cities that employ it - supporting them in their path towards the transformation in smart cities - but also the citizens: it is the citizens who will benefit in the first place from Smart Parking. People will enjoy an easier urban movement, a better general efficiency of P.A., better provided services, as well as saving on gas consumption. Finally, less traffic congestion entails less atmospheric and noise pollution and, thus, a greater development of business areas.

European parking systems are increasingly moving towards Smart Parking, according to a survey by Frost & Sullivan (2014.2015). The market related to Smart Parking will rapidly increase to 43 billion dollars in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.89%. The main growth hubs of smart parkings will be cities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. From there, then they will spread to other parts of these countries and on Italian soil.

The SPARTA solution, hence, has a remarkable social impact, since it will support and encourage a better turnover for parkings, reduce noxious gas emissions and pollution and benefit individual health and well-being; as well as giving back value to the community.
